Desire Somers owner of Desire Treats

Hello! I’m Desiree Somers, a seasoned chef and pastry chef based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. With over 15 years of experience in culinary arts and baking, I’ve honed my skills to create innovative, flavorful treats that delight the senses.

My passion is creating items that are innovative, delicious and flavorful. I enjoy making items with a twist to it. I've expanded my knowledge by also using organic ingredients and trying new flours that are gluten free and fermented.

I discovered my passion for cooking and baking at a young age in Vernon, British Columbia, where I was born and raised. I worked in the school’s kitchen and at a tea house in Vernon, BC, where I learned and practiced my skills. I moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1998, where I continued to pursue my passion for cooking. I worked at an Ethiopian restaurant and learned to cook and appreciate various cultural dishes. I also learned from my friends, who taught me their own unique recipes from different cuisines, such as Ghanaian, Somalian, Jamaican, Mexican, Italian, Greek and more.

I worked for DMH Hospitality Services in Vancouver BC, serving fine dining at banquets in the hotels. I've also worked with many chefs in different settings, helping them and learning their techniques in culinary. I was driven to create something different in the industry and bring something that would help customers and supply locally made options. I enjoyed helping others and catered for small business functions up to 300 people at an Indigenous hall.

MY love for cooking and baking led me to experiment with new and innovative dishes that I've shared with family and friends. These unique creations quickly gained popularity, and I began to receive requests to cater events and cook for private occasions. As my reputation as a skilled and creative culinary artist grew, I attended culinary school at Vancouver community college and graduated in 2011.

Implementing sophistication into my food creates memorable moments in my customers lives. I create innovative treats to tempt the taste buds by offering high quality food. My personal expertise specializes in items that will help with your health such as organic and fermented options. I bring a strong passion to my business and truly love what I do. I like to make sure my products are high quality and are made fresh to order.

Despite my busy schedule, with five children and being a stay at home mom, it's important to me to give back to the community. I recently catered 200 baked goods for a women’s recovery retreat organized by Christian Life Assembly church in Langley BC, as I have a commitment to using my skills to make a positive impact on others.

As part of my commitment to giving back, I recently had the privilege of catering for the iListen Canada Workshop. In Edmonton Alberta. This free event brought together 22 people who share a passion for community development and positive change. Through delicious treats and warm hospitality, we created a memorable experience for all attendees.

Last year, in October 2023, I had the pleasure of participating in the YEG Empowering You event at the Jerry Forbes Center. As part of my commitment to community engagement, I offered free baked goods to attendees, introducing them to my unique high tea experience.

Entrepreneurs with disabilities were at the heart of this initiative. Through delightful treats and warm conversations, we fostered connections and celebrated resilience. It was a memorable day, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful event.

Contact me for your next event! I look forward to sharing Desire Treats with you!
